The Top 5 Players of 2008: Wide Receivers

Today's Top 5 Players of 2008 will focus on wide receivers. There were some exciting plays by the wide-out position this past season. Everything from last second touchdown miracles, to catches that were thought impossible. So here it is .... the top 5 wide receivers in 2008:

Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree

  1. Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech) - Michael Crabtree had a phenomenal 2008 at Texas Tech. He accumulated 1,165 yards on 97 receptions, averaging 12.0 yards per catch. Crabtree also had 19 TDs with no fumbles. Expect to hear Crabtree's name numerous times again in 2009, and I'm sure he will be in the Heisman running.
  2. Percy Harvin (Florida) - Percy Harvin was again a huge factor in the Gators' championship season in 2008. Harvin acquired 645 yards receiving on 40 receptions, averaging 16.1 yards per catch. He also had 7 receiving TDs. What is even more impressive about Harvin's 2008 season is he had 659 rushing yards on 70 attempts, averaging a whopping 9.4 yards per carry and 10 TDs!!
  3. Jeremy Maclin (Missouri) - Jeremy Maclin had a stellar year with quarterback Chase Daniels gaining 1,260 yards on 102 receptions. Maclin averaged 12.4 yards per reception and 13 TDs. He also rushed for 293 yards on 40 carries and 2 TDs.
  4. Juaquin Iglesias (Oklahoma) - Juaquin Iglesias was a huge part of the powerful Sooner offense in 2008. Iglesias had 74 receptions equaling 1,150 yards which averaged 15.5 yards per reception and 10 TDS.
  5. Jarett Dillard (Rice) - Jarett Dillard is probably the least heard-of on this list. But do not let that fool you, Dillard is one talented receiver. Dillard amassed 1,310 receiving yards on 87 receptions with a 15.1 yards per catch average and 20 TDs. He was also named a Sports Illustrated All-American and a Walter Camp All-American in 2008. Dillard and Rice quarterback Chase Clement hold the NCAA Division 1-A record for career touchdowns between a quarterback-receiver tandem with 50.
So there they are.... the top 5 wide receivers of 2008. This is a great group of very talented receivers that I am sure we will see on Sundays in the near future.
