Should There Have Been One More Game?

It has been a few weeks since the National Championship game featuring Florida versus Oklahoma. Of course everyone knows Florida won the National Championship, but were they the best team of 2008? That is a question that has been pondered by almost every college football fan since January 8th (except for the die-hard Florida and SEC fans).

There have been coaches, media outlets, conference commissioners, athletic directors, you name it - saying *enter college name here* deserves a share of the National Championship. Personally, I think, with the current BCS system, that Florida is the deserving National Champ. The Gators played well all season, beat Alabama for the SEC Championship and beat Oklahoma for the title. Done deal. Lights out. Florida is the deserving team.

Ok, here it comes..... what about Utah? Yes, Utah had a superb season. The best a season could be without a National Championship title, 13-0. It is true that going undefeated in any conference or division is quite an accomplishment. Let's face it though, Utah has a very weak schedule. Playing UNLV, Wyoming, Air Force, and Utah State doesn't help with strength of schedule calculations. On the other hand, Utah did beat three ranked teams: TCU (#12 at the time), BYU (# 14 at the time), and Alabama (# 4 at the time). I think everyone outside of Utah was shocked at the beatdown they gave the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl.

In comparison, Florida is playing in arguably the best conference in the NCAA. It is said that if you get out of the SEC with a perfect record, you damn near deserve the national title. But let's take a closer look at Florida's schedule:

The Gators played seven games at home (Hawaii, Miami,Fla, Ole Miss, LSU, Kentucky, South Carolina, and The Citadel). They played four games on an opponents home field and three games at a neutral site. The Gators played 6 ranked teams including the SEC Championship and the National Championship games.

Clearly Florida had a much stronger schedule, but they did have one loss to an unranked Ole Miss. So should Utah get a share on the National Championship?

There is only one way to find out...... let them resolve it on the grid iron for one last game.
